Zili Sha (purple-grained clay) is documented in Li Hongyuan's "Yixing Zisha Mineral Source Atlas." It inherits the clay processing techniques from the Ming Dynasty, achieving the textural effects achieved by masters such Shi Dabin, Xu Youquan, and Chen Xinqing in their sand coloring. The material is sourced from the yellow stone quartzite layer, known for its excellent oily texture. Employing ancient coarse processing methods, the raw mineral material is soaked in water for several months, allowing the particles to separate naturally—fine particles rise to the top of the clay pool, medium ones settle in the middle, and coarse ones sink to the bottom. The resulting clay exhibits a natural harmony with uneven particle sizes, where grains are subtly visible, embodying a rugged and bold aesthetic.
